Built over nearly 400 years beginning in 1559 by Maharana Udai Singh II, founder of Udaipur, City Palace is a magnificent fusion of Rajput architecture with Mughal and later European influences. The sprawling palace complex is actually a series of interconnected palaces, courtyards, corridors, terraces, museums, royal chambers, and ceremonial spaces built by successive Maharanas of Mewar. Highlights include Mor Chowk (Peacock Courtyard) with exquisite glass mosaic peacocks, Sheesh Mahal mirror work, Zenana Mahal, grand gateways like Tripolia and Badi Pol, and elevated terraces offering unforgettable views of Lake Pichola, Jag Mandir, Jag Niwas (Lake Palace), and the Aravalli hills. The palace museum houses royal artifacts, weaponry, paintings, textiles, and historic memorabilia that bring Mewar’s legacy alive. The site also hosts cultural events, heritage experiences, fine dining, boutique shopping, and luxury hospitality within the larger palace complex.
What makes it special: Unlike a single palace monument, City Palace is an entire royal world—part fortress, part museum, part living heritage estate—offering architecture, history, lake views, and royal atmosphere in one destination.
⚠️ Best from October to March. Summer mornings are manageable but afternoons can feel warm inside courtyards. Monsoon gives beautiful lake views and dramatic skies. Peak tourist season (Dec–Jan) is crowded.
